Dr. Lip is a consultant cardiologist and professor of cardiovascular medicine at the City Hospital in Birmingham, England. (A cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases that affect the heart and circulation.)

He has a wide range of research interests, including atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, heart failure and angiogenesis. He is deputy editor of the Journal of Human Hypertension.
